Comparison of Student's Clinical Competency in Different Instructional Methods for Fundamentals of Nursing Practicum

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this study was to compare the clinical competency in different instructio nal methods for funda- mentals of nursing practicum, standardized patients methods story as text method ,and traditional lecture/model method. METHOD: The study was designed as a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group post-test design with three separate classes of sophomore students attending fundamentals of nursing classes at one baccaleureate nursing school located in metropoli tan Seoul area. Control group was taught by traditiona lecture/ model method and two experimental groups were taught by standardized patients method and story as text method. Data were collected from September, 1999 to June 2001. There were 36 students in the standardized patient method group, 38 students in story as text group, and 40 students in the control group. Data analysis was done using SPSS WINDOW 9.0. RESULT: The results showed that the standardized patients method and story as text method groups were significantly better in clinical judgement and communication skills than the traditional lecture/model method group. The standardized patients method group was significantly better in clinical nursing skills performance than two other groups. However, there was no significant difference among the three groups in student satisfaction. CONCLUSION: The standardized patients method is an effective in teaching clinical cometency for student nurses. It is necessary to explore more efficient way to develop standardized patients cases for wider areas of nursing education. Also, it is recommended to develop more research projects with many nursing programs.

The Development and Effect Analysis of an Internet Based Nursing Program: Application to Nursing Informatics

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate an internet based program for nursing informatics. The course subject, Nursing Informatics, was made by a computerized instructional module using the internet. The program was developed after taking into consideration the level of competence and knowledge in the subjects. It was based on 10 steps of the CAI module developed by Alessi and Trollip. The subjects consisted of 76 junior nursing students taking a Nursing Informatics course. Two sets of questionnaires were used for this study. First, a questionnaire was administered to 76 students to collect general information on their experience while using computers and the internet. Secondly, another questionnaire was administrated to 76 students after they took the course. They were asked to evaluate the program in terms of easiness of use, precision of contents, freshness of contents, motivation in learning, effectiveness of learning, enhancement of communication, precision of screen, and interest in the contents. IDs and passwords were given to the students. The students were asked to write their IDs and passwords when they connected to Nursing Informatics (http://hallym.ac.kr/~yhyom/inform.html). They were led the menu page which was categorized into 8 icons (i. e., syllabus, lecture notes, quick test, Q & A board, assignment, on-line test, related web sites and mailing lists) after confirming their IDs and passwords. The students' responses were very positive. This program was a very useful in increasing the effectiveness of learning and motivation in the students. Suggest to be use for other nursing courses.

Development and Evaluation of the Web-based Wound Care Course for Undergraduate Nursing Students

Purpose

This study developed a web-based wound care course for undergraduate nursing students and evaluated the course's content, system, and student-satisfaction.

Methods

This study was done in three stages, the development of the web-based wound care course, the implementation and evaluation of the course. The course was developed based on the ARCS model. 80 undergraduate nursing students to Y University in Korea used the web-based wound care program during four weeks. After that, they completed questionnaires, evaluating the contents, system, and their satisfaction.

Results

Eighteen learning objectives were used to create the web-based wound care course and the course was developed with 7 chapters and 20 subsections. The analysis of the questionnaires showed a mean score for content and system-related items of 3.04 each, out of a possible 4 points. Student satisfaction items had a mean score of 2.89.

Conclusions

The web-based course allowed students access to the course anytime and anywhere, and according to their own learning abilities. However this advantage would only be possible when nurse educators develop qualitative web-based course to meet the demand of a complex health care system as well as the needs of the students and the effectively incorporate it into traditional lectures.

Development and Effect Analysis of Web-Based Instruction Program to Prevent Elementary School Students from Safety Accidents

Purpose

This study was aimed to develop a WBI(Web Based Instruction) program on safety for 3rd grade elementary school students and to test the effects of it.

Method

The WBI program was developed using Macromedia flash MX, Adobe Illustrator 10.0 and Adobe Photoshop 7.0. The web site was http://www.safeschool. co.kr. The effect of it was tested from Mar 24, to Apr 30, 2003. The subjects were 144 students enrolled in the 3rd grade of an elementary school in Gyungju. The experimental group received the WBI program lessons while each control group received textbook-based lessons with visual presenters and maps, 3 times. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, and χ2 test, t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA.

Result

First, the WBI group reported a longer effect on knowledge and practice of accident prevention than the textbook-based lessons, indicating that the WBI is more effective. Second, the WBI group was better motivated to learn the accident prevention lessons, showing that the WBI is effective. As a result, the WBI group had total longer effects on knowledge, practice and motivation of accident prevention than the textbook-based instruction.

Conclusion

We recommend that this WBI program be used in each class to provide more effective safety instruction in elementary schools.

Development and Effects of an e-Learning Program in Operating Room Nursing for Nursing Students

Purpose

This study was conducted to develop an e-Learning program that assists nursing students' clinical practice in operating room nursing and to examine the learning effects.

Methods

Based on content and need analysis, 9 learning modules were developed for nursing care in operating rooms and with operating equipment. To verify the effects of the program, a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The participants in this study were 74 third-year nursing students (34 in the experimental and 40 in the control group) from a junior college in G-city, Korea, who were engaged in a one week clinical practicum in an operating unit. Frequencies, χ2-test and t-test with the SPSS program 17.0 were used to analyze the data.

Results

Knowledge was significantly higher in the experimental group compared to the control group (p=.018). However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in self-directed learning. The experimental group had significantly higher motivation toward learning, which was examined posttest only (p=.027).

Conclusion

These results indicate that the implementation of an e-Learning program needs to be continued as an effective educational tool, but more research on the best way to implement e-Learning in students' practicum is needed.

Development of a Web-based Education Program for Nurses working in Nursing Homes on Human Rights of Older Adults

Purpose

This study was done to develop a web-based education program for nurses working in nursing homes. The focus was on the rights of older adults.

Methods

The program was designed based on the Network-Based Instructional System Design (NBISD) model and was operated and evaluated between July 2007 and June 2008.

Results

Out of nursing records of 40 residents from a nursing home, the final 7 cases were deducted through classification using the Resource Utilization Group (RUG)-III. The data on needs for education was collected from 28 nurses working in 15 nursing homes located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, who agreed to complete a self-report questionnaire. A comprehensive review of the literature and two focus groups interviews were used to search for risk factors and guidelines for protection of human rights. The education program was developed based on Kolb's experiential learning model and composed of 5 units, which included content on types of human rights and rights to death with dignity, elder abuse, physical liberty, and self-determination. The program was positively evaluated showing a score of 3.35 (SD=0.37) out of 4.

Conclusion

The educational program developed in this study should promote nurses' sensitivity to the rights of elders and improve nurses' behaviors in protecting the rights of elders residing in nursing homes.

Development of a Web-based Senescence Preparation Education Program for Successful Aging for Middle-aged Adults

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to develop a web-based senescence preparation education program to promote successful aging.

Methods

This program was developed based on Network-Based Instructional System Design (NBISD) model, using the following 5 processes: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The program was operated for 10 weeks from March 17 to May 25, 2008.

Results

There were 4 menu bars, introduction, related data, lecture room, and communication on the main page. In the operation of this program, HTML, ASP, JAVA Script, Namo web editor, Edit Plus, Front Page and multimedia technology were applied. The program content consisted of understanding elderly people, physical health, activity & exercise, nutrition, medication use, psychological health, intellectual health, understanding death, welfare system and leisure activity.

Conclusion

This program could be a useful means to provide senescence preparation information to middle-aged adults. Also, it is expected to offer individualized learning opportunities to many learners in various settings. Nurses should further develop and facilitate various learning strategies including web- based programs for elder care.

Development and Evaluation of an e-Learning Program for Mothers of Premature Infants

Purpose

It has been attempted to support mother of premature infants by providing information of premature infant care using e-learning because premature infants need continuous care from birth to after discharge.

Methods

The e-Learning Program for mother of premature was developed with Xpert, Namo web editor, Adobe Photoshop, and PowerPoint and applied for 4 weeks from 4 to 30 September 2006.

Results

1) We found that the contents of information which premature infants' need when being in the hospital and after discharge were the definition of a premature infant, orientation of NICU, care of premature infants, care of premature infants' common diseases, the connection of healthcare resources, exchange of information, and the management of rearing stress. 2) The program content consisted of cause of premature birth, comparison to full-term baby, physiology character, orientation of NICU, common health problems, follow up care, infection control, feeding, normal development physically and mentally, weaning method, and vaccination.

Conclusion

Considering the results, this program for mother of premature is a useful means to provide premature-care information to mothers. This information can be readily accessible and can be varied and complex enough to be able to help mothers to the information and assistance they require.

Development of an e-Learning Program about Medication for New Nurses

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to develop an e-Learning program about medication for nurses to enhance nurses' medication performance ability and to analyze learners' responses after studying with this program.

Method

For the development of the e-Learning program, the NBISD(Network Based Instructional Systems Design) model, suggested by Jung(1999) was applied as a basic model and the instruction design theory of Gagne & Briggs(1979) and ARCS theory of Keller(1983) were applied. After the operation of this program for one month to 34 new nurses, learners' responses were analyzed.

Result

Learners' knowledge of medication was greatly improved after this program. In addition learners' satisfaction with the overall education program, help in field applicability, ease of screen shift and exploration, and tutor activities were high and the contents were regarded suitable for e-Learning. Many things were advantageous such as easy accessibility, easy understandability with pictures and flash animation, practical cases and feedback from a tutor. Provision of a supplementary handout and improvement of a tight time schedule were pointed out as things to be improved.

Conclusion

This e-Learning program can be used effectively for medication education for registered nurses, student nurses, and new nurses.
