Purpose
This study was designed to build a theoretical frame to provide practical help to prevent and manage adolescent internet game addiction by developing a prediction model through a comprehensive analysis of related factors.
Methods
The participants were 1,318 students studying in elementary, middle, and high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, Korea. Collected data were analyzed using the SPSS program. Decision Tree Analysis using the Clementine program was applied to build an optimum and significant prediction model to predict internet game addiction related to various factors, especially parent related factors.
Results
From the data analyses, the prediction model for factors related to internet game addiction presented with 5 pathways. Causative factors included gender, type of school, siblings, economic status, religion, time spent alone, gaming place, payment to Internet cafe@, frequency, duration, parent's ability to use internet, occupation (mother), trust (father), expectations regarding adolescent's study (mother), supervising (both parents), rearing attitude (both parents).
Conclusion
The results suggest preventive and managerial nursing programs for specific groups by path. Use of this predictive model can expand the role of school nurses, not only in counseling addicted adolescents but also, in developing and carrying out programs with parents and approaching adolescents individually through databases and computer programming.

Purpose
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor disabilities and increasing dependence on others for daily life activities with consequent impact on patients' and caregivers' quality of life. The aim of this study was to elucidate the burden on primary caregivers of patients with PD, and identify related factors.
Methods
A cross-sectional descriptive study. Seventy-six primary caregivers of PD patients in a neurology outpatient clinic, Seoul, Korea completed structured questionnaires, of which 68 were analyzed. The structured self-report questionnaire included (1) demographic information on the caregivers, (2) information regarding the disease characteristics of the patients, and (3) the subjective and objective caregiver burdens as assessed on Montgomery, Gonyea, & Hooyman's scale.
Results
The mean age of the caregivers was 54.56 years, and spouses represented the largest proportion(47.0%). Caregivers of PD patients experienced high levels of burden (mean scores on the subjective and objective burdens were 45.22 and 34.90, respectively), which were comparable to the caregiver burdens in stroke, and higher than the caregiver burdens in general chronic disease. Older caregivers and spousal caregivers experienced significantly higher burdens (p=.004 and p=.019, respectively). A greater motor disability and higher modified Hoehn and Yahr grade were related to higher caregiver burden (p=.001 and p=.018, respectively).
Conclusion
Caring for PD patients is associated with a high level of caregiver burden. Therefore, healthcare professionals should identify the burden of caregivers who look after PD patients and develop comprehensive management strategies both for patients and their caregivers.

-
Purpose
This study was to investigate the factors influencing problem behaviors among adolescents.
Method
The subjects for this study were 596 students in middle school in Seoul. The data was collected during the period from May to November, 2001 by use of questionnaires. The instruments used were the Child Problem Behavior list by Hong (1986), the Body Cathexis Scale by Secord and Jourard(1953), and the Beck Depression Inventory by Beck(1978). The data was analyzed by using the SPSS-Win program.
Result
Problem behaviors showed a significant negative correlation with body image (r= -.310. p=.000) and positive correlation with depression (r=.674, p=.000). There were significant differences in the problem behavior scores of subjects according to sex, family status, economic status, and school scores. Female students were found to have a high degree of internalized problem behaviors. In addition, depression, body image, and sex were significant predictors to explain problem behaviors(47.3%). Depression, sex, grade, and school scores were significant predictors to explain externalized problem behaviors(21.9%) and depression and body image, internalized problem behaviors(51.4%).
Conclusion
Since predicting factors of problem behaviors among middle school students by problem behavior type and sex were different, then practitioners should consider these differences when developing programs for them.

Abstract
PDF
This study was designed to analyze the nursing curricula in graduate programs and suggest the direction of future nursing curricula. Thirty-two nursing curricula for a master's degree and fifteen curricula for a doctoral degree from general graduate programs, fifteen nursing curricula for a master's degree from fifteen educational graduate programs, eight nursing curricula for master degree from eight out of twelve public health graduate programs, three nursing curricula for a master's degree from three administrative graduate programs, and four nursing curricula for a master's degree from four clinical nursing graduate programs, were analyzed. Consequently, It was hard to find a clear difference between the educational goals and objectives, the subjects open in nursing curricula for a master's degree and those for a doctoral degree of graduate programs. The educational graduate programs, public health graduate programs, administrative graduate programs, and clinical nursing graduate programs, each program showed ittle diffrent in each educational goal and objective. However, because the various kinds of subjects open in each program were not based on the core curricula, the quality of the nursing curricula need to be evaluated and develope the curricula to difference are the goal and objective. Accordingly, future studies need to be focused on developing core nursing curricula reflecting the characteristics of each graduate program.

Abstract
PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine the meaning of the pain and experiences of
elderly women with osteoarthritis, by adopting Colaizzi's phenomenological method.
The participants were 7 elderly women over the age of 65. They were selected using a
theoretical sampling technique. The Data was collected by in-depth and open-ended
interviews from Dec. 1. 1999. to Feb, 28. 2000. The length of the interviews varied from
120 minutes to 180 minutes. Data was recorded and analyzed by a constant comparative method . From the data, significant statements were extracted and then organized into 48
themes, which resulted in 15 clusters of themes and 6 categories. The final descriptions
turned out to be valid through the interviewee' validation process.
Essential themes of the pain experiences emerged : "physical discomfortness(disturbances)",
"negative state of mind", "influence of the death", "positive change in life", "Cause of
pain perceived", and "change of their personal relationships". From these results, it was
found that elderly women need nursing care based on a deep understanding of pain, and
a reflection on their past is imperative to overcome their given situations.
In conclusion, it is suggested that the care givers provide more support to solve the
problems experienced by the elderly. Thus the researchers expect to provide
understanding of older people and give basic data of holistic care for them.

Abstract
PDF
This study examined all the research published in Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing (JKAN) for
last 30 years, from its beginning year to year 1999, based on an objective frame of evaluation. The purpose
of this study is to reflect the trend of nursing research in Korea to date, and to provide an optimal
direction for future research. The total number of 959 studies were analyzed with the following results.
1. Since 1990s, the number of non-degree based research has been larger than that of degree-based
research compared to 1970s and 1980s. Both collaborative and funded research has been particularly
increased in a gradual rate.
2. Research on nurses or nursing students has decreased while research on more diverse populations such
as patients, patient families, or community-dwelling healthy clients has increased.
3. While essential nursing concepts such as human, nursing, and health have been consistently dealt as
main research topics, research related to the concept of environ- ment has been insufficiently conducted.
4. It was remarkable that the quality of nursing research has been improved due to the acknowledgement
of the importance of the empirical research method within the nursing community.
5. Qualitative research has appeared in the journal since the late 1990s, but it is still regarded to be in
its novice stage.
6. Although the utilization of research findings for expanding the nursing body of knowledge has been wide
in diverse specialties, most studies are limited to focus on concept development or evolution yet. also, in
some of these research finding are utilization already considerably as to develop nursing interventions.
Based on these findings, conclusions are extended to the following discussions:
For the last 30 years, nursing research in Korea has shown an acute methodological development in both
quantity and quality. However, there has been a lack of research on theory development although it is one
of the ultimate goals in nursing. Further research should be empirical enough to be utilized in an actual
nursing care context, and thus to be basis of developing culturally competent nursing theories in Korea.

Abstract
PDF
This study is based on grounded theory methodology by Strauss & Corbin(1998). Ten hospitalized subjects were interviewed for data collection. In the process of data analysis, 'acceptance' is found to be the causal condition, while 'health professionals' skillfulness', 'ward environment', 'history of hospitalization', and 'general conditions' were identified as context, 'felling of relief' as the core phenomenon, 'self-efficacy', 'support of others', and 'life style' as the intermediate situation, 'passive reaction', 'alternative reaction' and 'active reaction' as the strategy and 'stabilization', 'satisfaction', 'hope' and 'carrying out' as consequences. 'Feeling of relief' is found to go through the three stages of recognition-generation-maintenance after the five different patterns. 1) In case the health professionals are skillful, the ward environment is favorable, the general conditions of the patients improved and as a result the feeling of relief is strong, during the first hospitalization, the self-efficacy of the subjects tends to be strong. They proceed toward the goal set for themselves with a renewed hope and active or alternative reaction toward the feeling of relief. 2) The subjects tend to proceed toward the goal set for themselves with a renewed hope and active and alternative reaction toward the feeling of relief in case health professionals are skillful, the ward environment is favorable the general conditions of the subjects improved, self-efficacy is strong, and lifestyle is autonomous, during the second hospitalization even though support of others is merely superficial. 3) The subjects tend to stabilize, and satisfy themselves with the given situation with passive and alternative reaction to the feeling of relief in case health professionals are skillful and the ward environment is favorable but the general conditions worsened and accordingly the feeling of relief, is weak and life style is dependent during the second hospitalization although the subjects' self-efficacy is strong and support of others is specific. 4) The subjects tend to stabilize and satisfy themselves with the given situation with passive and alternative reaction to the feeling of relief in case health professionals are unskillful the ward environment is unfavorable, the general conditions improved, support of others is specific but life style is dependent and self-efficacy is weak during the first hospitalization. 5) The subjects tend to stabilize and satisfy themselves with the given situation in case health professionals are unskillful the ward environment is unfavorable but the general conditions improved support of others is specific and as a result self-efficacy is strong but life style is dependent.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of teenagers' perceptions to bullies according
to the classification types of Q-methodology.
The results of the analysis were classified in 5 types.
Type 1, which was the type geared foward solution, showed that they expressed a strong attitude of
sympathy and protection towards the victim. However, they had harbored rage and hostile feelings against
the assaulter. For example, when they witnessed the bully in action, they positively intervened in the
situation.
Type 2, which was the observer type, showed that they thought the victims were to blame for their
misfortune. Also, when a friend who was left out in the cold by his classmates, they were just watched
without showing any special interest.
Type 3, which was the type of conflict, indicated that they believed that the both the victim and the
assaulter should have responsibility. In contrast to the previous type, they had sympathy for the friend who
was left out in the cold by his classmates, they had the dual feeling that intended to use the bully under
the situation with his friend.
Type 4, which was the type of assenting, indicated that they assumed an indifferent attitude to the
situation, while they implied assenting to the situation of the friend who had a bad relationship with them.
Type 5, which was the negative type, showed that they had the negative view to the situation of bully
itself so that they did not recognize the bully as the method of revenge for whatever reason.
The results of the study showed that the bully increased the factor of stress to school life of the victim or
assaulter, even in the subjective position. The perception of the bully should change according to the
characteristics of the types of people and it is necessary to study how to cope with the situations.

Abstract
PDF
Socialization is the process of moving from one social role to another by gaining knowledge, skills and behaviors to participate in a group. Nurses who graduate from nursing school, enter the work force, and develop a career undergo socialization as they become insiders in the hospital. This study was designed to identify experiences of the nurses' socialization process in the hospital setting. The subjects were 6 nurses. Data were collected by recording and transcribing interviews and analyzed in the framework of grounded theory as mapped out by Strauss and Corbin(1990). The core category in the analysis of the experiences of nurses' socialization process was "being beyond". In the process of data analysis, 22 categories were identified. These categories were again grouped into 13. Based upon these results, it is recommended that development of resocialization models to establish nursing identity are necessary.

By using Q-methodology, this study examines the attitudes of pregnant womens' husbands toward breastfeeding. Also, the research provides basic data necessary to develop a strategy for recommending breastfeeding. A total of 112 items for the Q-population were collected from related literature and interviews with the general public, specialists, pregnant women and the general public, specialists, pregnant women and their husbands. Finally, 38 statements were selected. Twenty one husbands of pregnant women classified these statements on each card on a 1 to 9 point scale(forced normal distribution) and wrote the reasons for both the most supported and the mos resisted statements. The materials collected were analyzed by using pc QUANL program. The analysis drew down following fact that even though the attitudes of the husbands of pregnant were very similar, they could be classified to three types according to the motivation and recognition the degree of choosing breastfeeding. Type 1 is the mother's duty supporter, who insists that breastfeeding is completely natural and the proper duty of the mother. Type 2 is the emotional value supporter, who thinks that breastfeeding emotionally affects both the baby and the mother in a positive way. Type 3 is the conditional choice supporter, who chooses the most proper suckling way of feeding according to given conditions.

Abstract

This study is designed to contribute to the nursing intervention of adolescent domestic violence victims by describing specifically what they go through and on this basis work out a grounded theory on the adolescent's experience in domestic violence. The data were analyzed in the framework of grounded theory as mapped out by Strauss and Corbin(1990). The major findings of this research are as follows : The core category was found to be the adaptation of "Joyudeum" or "Straight jacketing". The sub-categories identified in the process of grounded data analysis were 'menacing', 'being harassed', 'being pressed', 'being attacked', 'being strapped', 'being filled with anger', 'getting angry', 'being oppressed', 'being filled with anger', 'becoming hard', 'endurance', 'regulation', 'seriousness', 'repetition', 'being helpful', 'dependence', 'thinking oriented', 'blowing off', 'going astray', 'self-deprecating', 'shaking off, covering up', 'governing, 'being devoted', 'performing', 'being transformed', 'bolting', 'being shaken', 'withdrawing', 'disliking', 'bolting', 'being shaken', withdrawing', 'disliking', 'bitterness'. These categories were again grouped into 13 categories including 'threatening', 'straight jacketing', 'tolerance', 'violence', 'supporter', 'supporting type', 'thinking oriented', 'impulsive response', 'self-controlled', 'response', 'self-reliance', 'wandering', 'withdrawal' and 'pain'. Of these the five sub-categories 'being filled with anger', 'getting angry', 'being oppressed', 'being strained', 'becoming hard' were grouped into a core category "straight jacketing". Those adolescents brought up in a violent family go through three stages of the adaptation of "straight jacketing". that is, generation, response and adaptation. The following four theses were confirmed on the basis of repetitive relations : 1) If a subject's tolerance is strong, the episodes of the violence are frequent and serious, with the resulting straight jacketing being stronger but the subject's supporter is highly mature, the supporting type is concrete and the thinking oriented is wishful, the responses to the straight jacketing result in a self-control whose consequence is self-reliance with part of it resulted in withdrawal and pain. 2) If a subject's tolerance is weak, the episodes of the violence are frequent but not serious, with the resulting straight jacketing being weaker but the subject's supporter is immature, the supporting type is superficial and the thinking oriented is extemporary, the responses to the straight jacketing result in an impulsion whose consequence is wandering with prat of it resulted in withdrawal and pain. 3) If a subject's tolerance is weak, the episodes of the violence are frequent and serious, the straight jacketing is strong, the subject's supporter is immature and the supporting type is superficial but the thinking oriented is wishful, the responses to the straight jacketing result in an impulsion whose consequence is withdrawal and pain with part of it resulted in wandering. 4) If a subject's tolerance is strong and the episodes of the violence are infrequent and not serious, the straight jacketing is weak, the subject's supporter is immature and the supporting type is superficial but the thinking oriented is wishful, the responses to the straight jacketing result in a self-control whose consequence is withdrawal and pain with part of it resulted in self-reliance.
